Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania just premiered on Disney+ coinciding with the physical media releases of the film on May 16, 2023. Both ways of watching the movie follow the early digital release on April 18, which made ‘Quantumania’ available for purchase or rent.
But Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania on Disney+ offers an advantage over both digital purchases and physical media.
The advantage, if you want to call it that, is that it can display portions of the movie in a full-screen mode called IMAX Enhanced. Disney+ is the only service that offers IMAX Enhanced, and so watching ‘Quantumania’ from Apple TV, Movies Anywhere, or other platforms will only give you the widscreen aspect ratio, which displays the letterbox format.

Unless you’ve been making a point of buying the handful of 4K Blu-ray discs out there that have been mastered for the IMAX Enhanced home entertainment experience, you’d be forgiven for thinking based on its appearance on streaming platforms that the IMAX Enhanced system is just a picture quality/screen-filling aspect ratio thing. Actually, though, IMAX Enhanced in its full form has an audio element too. Namely a specially tweaked version of Xperi’s DTS:X multi-channel sound format that adds some IMAX ‘secret sauce’ (which sounds to me like more dynamic range and, perhaps, a slightly more expansive soundstage) to the regular DTS:X experience.
Now, happily, a new arrangement between Xperi and Disney+ means that soon streamers will finally be able to join 4K Blu-ray owners in getting the full picture and sound IMAX Enhanced experience – provided, at least, they’ve got a TV and/or AV receiver capable of handling it.

Disney+ is bringing another facet of the Imax theater experience to the living room: The streamer plans to add support for enhanced Imax signature sound by DTS for a select batch of Marvel movies and other titles in 2023.
Disney Streaming, in partnership with Imax and Xperi’s DTS audio-tech subsidiary, announced that Imax Enhanced titles on Disney+ will be available with Imax signature sound by DTS on supported hardware devices sometime this year. According to the companies, the new feature is “specially calibrated” to provide immersive sound reproduction on home-theater systems — ensuring that “filmmakers’ creative intent is fully optimized for an Imax-quality presentation.”

Don’t say Disney isn’t a practitioner of theatrical windows: Their $821M-plus grossing Marvel Studios hit Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will finally land on Disney on Feb. 1, 82 days after its U.S. theatrical release. The movie opened on Nov. 11 to a stateside gross of $181.3M, $331.6M WW.
While the previous Bob Chapek-led era of Disney collapsed windows on Marvel’s Black Widow, with a theatrical day-and-date release on Disney+ (though had a paid tier for subscribers) during the pandemic in 2021, the studio backed off on such practices on future Marvel titles after a legal entanglement with that pic’s star Scarlett Johansson.
Since then, Marvel Studios movies have had lengthy windows: Thor: Love and Thunder hit Disney+ last year on Sept. 8, 63 days after being in theaters. When that Taika Waititi-directed sequel landed on Disney+ it had already made $341.2M in theaters. The pic would go on to make another $2M in its simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ run for a final domestic take of $343.2M. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness debuted on Disney+ on June 22 after a 48-day theatrical run (when it had amassed at that point in time $408M U.S. in what was a total B.O. run of $411.3M).
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will join 16 other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies now streaming in IMAX Enhanced on Disney+, which gives subscribers more picture with an expanded aspect ratio for an immersive viewing experience at home.

Disney+ is bolstering its IMAX Enhanced films, including some Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, with another audio option. The streaming service will enable IMAX signature sound by DTS on select titles this year, offering viewers high-fidelity audio to go with the expanded aspect ratio.
You’ll need compatible equipment to hear DTS audio, however. At the outset, some IMAX Enhanced-certified TVs from manufacturers such as Sony and Hisense will support DTS on Disney+, as will certain AV receivers from the likes of Denon, Marantz and JBL. However, you don’t need any particular devices to view IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio of 1.90:1, which offers up to 26 percent taller pictures during certain sequences.
