TSUTAYA BRINGS THE IMAX EXPERIENCE® INTO THE HOME AS FIRST-TO-MARKET JAPANESE DIGITAL RETAILER FOR IMAX® ENHANCED

IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) and audio leader DTS®, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xperi Corporation (Nasdaq: XPER), today announced the continued expansion of the IMAX® Enhanced ecosystem in partnership with Tsutaya, a leading online and physical entertainment retailer in Japan. Beginning later this year, Tsutaya will offer exclusive IMAX Enhanced movie titles through its over-the-top (OTT) streaming service. By combining digitally remastered 4K HDR content and DTS audio with best-in-class consumer electronics and streaming platforms, IMAX Enhanced is the only way to experience IMAX’s signature picture, sound and scale — just as the filmmaker intended — in the home.

Through its partnership with IMAX, Tsutaya’s OTT service “TSUTAYA TV” will provide movie fans throughout Japan the ability to rent or buy Sony Pictures Entertainment’s record-shattering hit “SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME” — featuring approximately 40 minutes of IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio that enables the full scope and scale of the picture. In addition, Tsutaya will offer Sony Pictures Entertainment’s “MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL,” “SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE,” “JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE,” and “SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING,” among other blockbuster movies, as part of its ever-expanding line-up of IMAX Enhanced titles.

“We are proud that “TSUTAYA TV” is the first-to-market OTT service provider for IMAX Enhanced in Japan,” said, Tomohiro Yamauchi, Operating Officer at TSUTAYA Digital Entertaiment Co., Ltd.  “We have been proposing lifestyle through entertainment content since our founding. Through this initiative, we look forward to delivering a premium home entertainment experience to our customers. We will continue to strive to make it easy to enjoy Hollywood content at home with the best in class quality in video and sound.”

“Through IMAX Enhanced, our streaming partner in Japan can now offer their consumers blockbuster movie content the way it is meant to be experienced in the home,” said Tony Navarro, Senior Vice President of Strategy at IMAX Corporation and Global Head of IMAX Enhanced. “IMAX Enhanced brings together the best of IMAX and DTS and continues to push the boundaries of what consumers expect and demand from 4K streaming.”

“We are pleased to continue the global expansion of the IMAX Enhanced ecosystem with our entrance into the Japanese market with leading digital retailer Tsutaya,” said Geir Skaaden, Xperi Executive Vice President and Chief Products and Services Officer.  “Our ability to bring together premium devices and leading streaming partners to deliver exceptional content continues to position IMAX Enhanced as the new standard in home entertainment.”

Tsutaya TV service meets the IMAX Enhanced standard for 4K HDR streaming and uses a special variant of the DTS codec technology integrated in home audio equipment to deliver an IMAX signature sound experience with more immersive, powerful sound. IMAX Enhanced is supported by participating studios such as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Paramount Pictures, as well as a fast-growing roster of device partners including premium televisions, projectors, A/V receivers and loudspeakers — all of which have met performance requirements set by IMAX, DTS and leading technical specialists throughout Hollywood.
